Te Reo Māori Season

Each year, Taki Rua presents a highly engaging and meaningful children's theatre show performed completely in te reo Māori, to thousands of school-children and people of all ages throughout Aotearoa. First presented in 1995 in Wellington, Te Reo Maori Season sees a small team of performers and theatre professionals travel the length of the country with a set, costumes, props and soundscape. These lively and animated shows can be understood by people of all comprehension levels, no matter where they are on their reo Māori journey, and are performed in
kura kaupapa Māori, mainstream schools and community spaces.

Our Te Reo Māori Season reflects our desire to broaden the artistic and creative horizons for all New Zealanders within a Māori story-telling context, to present more high quality kaupapa Māori and te reo Māori programmes to more people around Aotearoa New Zealand.

Taki Rua brings back one of its original Te Reo Māori Season productions: Taku Waimarie, by Willy Craig Fransen. Performed entirely in te reo Māori, this delightful classic is reimagined for the tamariki of today.

Tamatea runs away from the family farm, headed for the bright lights of the city. He is knocked unconscious, and awakes to find the city ruled by a dreaded taniwha that forbids the use of te reo Māori. Can Tamatea and his new city friends defeat the taniwha?

Full of humour and endearing characters, Taku Waimarie reveals the power of working together to overcome life’s challenges in a participatory and animated production.

Booking fees:

Fees are priced on a per-student structure.

50 students or fewer: $300

51 – 100 students: $500

101 – 200 students: $800

201+ students: $1,000

Two Performances in a Day at one school, POA (price on application).

All prices quoted include GST.

Once we've scheduled your booking, we'll send through an invoice for a $300 deposit.
Bookings won't be confirmed until this deposit has been paid.

After the performance, we'll send you a second invoice for your booking fees, less this $300 deposit.

For schools with 50 students or fewer, the total cost is $300, and no second invoice is issued.

Cancellation

We are unable to refund deposits placed for bookings cancelled later than 30 days before the performance.

If cancellation occurs between 30 and 60 days before the performance, a 50% refund is provided.
For cancellations over 60 days before the performance, a full refund is available.

If cancellation occurs due to tangihana then we will do our best to accommodate the needs of your rōpū. Unfortunately, we are unable to guarantee another performance booking space will be available.

Physical requirements

Our team bring all their own props, set and equipment. All we need to perform is a performance area of 5 x 6 metres, and access to two electrical power points.

Schools typically hold the performance in a school hall or auditorium, where large audiences can fit. However the show can also be held in smaller spaces – gyms, libraries or large classrooms.

On the day

In order to set up, our team will arrive at least one hour before the show is scheduled to start.

After set up, we welcome (but don't expect) mihi whakatau, pōwhiri, morning teas or other welcoming events. If you'd like our team to be at school for a bit longer and participate in other school events, let us know ahead of time. We'll do our best to fit this into our schedule.

The show runs for roughly 45 minutes.

After the performance, we leave some time for questions and answers with the students. This allows students to learn about the production and the life of a working actor. After the show, the team will take roughly another 30 minutes to pack down.
